Nokia X7 review - The phone from outer space

When the Nokia X7 arrived to my home, courtesy of the nice folks at WOMWorld, I wasn't there to receive it as with almost every package that comes with my name on it. So my wife received the package. I usually ask her to open up the package and plug the phone into the charger so I can use it fully charged when I get back home. When I get home I usually find the phone still connected to the charger lying on the kitchen table. So, I go and grab the phone and start playing with it. The day I got the X7, I had a "WTF?" moment when I got home... The phone wasn't there where all phones are left my wife for charging. So, I scratched my head, and I asked her where it was. She told me that the battery was almost full, and she didn't plug it, but she used it the entire day, shooting photos and videos of my kid, and playing Angry Birds on it. My jaw dropped! It was the first time I've seen my wife being so enthusiastic about a phone. And a touch phone none the less! She's a sworn enemy of touchscreens. She completely ignored the C7, E7 and N8, but she could not resist the X7. And after I held it in my hand I understood why. It has something, that just attracts you to it. it may be the design, it may be the way it feels in your hand. Bottom line, it's a joy to behold.




I usually shoot an unboxing video for every phone I receive, but I barely got 15 minutes of use of the X7 that day, and shot the unboxing next morning while my wife was still asleep, otherwise I might have waited for a few more days.

The X7 doesn't have the camera that the N8 has, doesn't have the sliding keyboard, the Clear Black Display, or the front facing video camera, but it has personality, and it's just a beauty. It's sleek, and I'm talking SE Xperia Arc-like sleek, but much stronger and much better build quality than the Xperia. Because of the design of the phone, the screen seems to be even bigger than it actually is. And the design, makes it look like something from outer space, which made me wonder which planet did the DHL guy came from :P

No one can accuse Nokia of lacking originality and innovation when it comes to design. These days Apple sues Samsung because of "rounded corners with one button" phones. They should take a look at what Nokia does design-wise and innovate instead of wasting time and money in courts.

Back to the X7. The phone is equipped with the same EDoF 8MP dual led flash camera like the C7 and E7. It cannot be compared with the 12MP AF camera of the N8, but still holds it's own, even indoors.

The phone has an unbelievable balance between size and weight. It feels solid, and just fills the palm of your hand.




The display is very bright, but the X7 does not have ambient light sensor. Maybe it was meant to be that way since it's an entertainment phone and most of the times you'll be holding it in landscape mode, and the light sensor may get covered up by your hand.

So, the X7 doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the E7 or the N8, but it quickly became my favorite.

Another thing I liked about the X7 was, and you're gonna think I'm out of my mind, the fact that the touchscreen is not insanely sensitive like the E7's. It does not register a click after the slightest of touches. On the E7 I got a lot of accidental clicks, but with the X7 it never happened. Maybe this is one of the reasons I favor it over the E7.

I got a lot of WOW's at work when I showed up with the X7. And for good reasons.

The picture quality is good, not best, and the HD video recording is very good, as I was expecting from a Symbian^3 device. But the device really shines when you're playing games. It's a whole new experience. The phone seems to be designed to be used mainly in landscape mode, held with both hands. Angry Birds just got better on the X7's screen.

The gaming side is enforced by the two games that come preloaded, Galaxy on fire and Asphalt 5. Both play very well on the X7.

Unlike it's S^3 brethren, the X7 does not have any internal storage, but it has an SD expansion slot and it comes with an 8GB SD card preinstalled. You might think about getting a larger SD card if you plan shooting HD videos a lot, because they tend to eat up your SD space.

The box comes with a micro-USB charger, a first for Nokia Symbians. The X7 uses only the micro-USB port for charging, being the first Nokia that does not use the classic Nokia pinhole charger.

The box also contains a micro-USB data cable, and a set of earphones.




On the top of the X7 you can find the micro-USB port, the 3.5mm jack port and the power/unlock button. Unlike previous Nokia touch phones, this one does not have an unlock knob, the only to unlock it is by the unlock touchscreen button. This is more in line with modern smartphones, even though I have to say I miss the unlock knob.




On the right side of the phone you can find the volume rocker and the camera key.

On the left side you have the SD card tray and the SIM card tray.

On the front of the phone you have the ear piece with the proximity sensor, the large 4 inch touchscreen and the classic menu button. There are no dedicated call and hang up keys. The menu button is nicely located in the middle.

On the back we have the 8MP camera with dual-LED flash.

The grids on the bottom corners of the phone hide the stereo speakers. The phone only has 2 speakers, not 4 as it may seem, the top grids being there for design only.

SOFTWARE

The X7 is powered by Symbian Anna, with the additional games I mentioned above. The Symbian Anna review I wrote was done on the X7.

So, how good is the user experience? Well, think about this: It turned my wife who's a touchscreen hater, and who could not use an Android phone if her life depended on it. She loved it, and now she wants one for Christmas. Hope it'll get cheaper by then.

Price of Acer Iconia Tab A100 in India

If you will recall, Acer announced the Iconia Tab A100 back in February. However, it had some compatibility issues that is why the company delayed its release twice. But the delay will be all worth it because the Acer Iconia Tab A100 will ship with Android 3 Honeycomb.

The Iconia Tab A100 is a 7-inch LCD capacitive device and it will be the first of a tab this size to have Honeycomb on board. Other 7-inch tablets available in the market today usually have Android 2.2 or 2.3 on board.

The wait for Acer Iconia Tab A100 is over because the company recently announced that it will be out in the market this August! This time it’s for real! And to add icing to the cake, the Tab A100 will cost 0! Not bad at all especially since the device will already have Honeycomb.

Gadget Mobile Technology : SamsungNexus S - Samsung have not historically been a manufacturer that pushed the boundaries of innovation. They appeared to be more focused on creating mobile devices to compete, not devices that redefined the market.

Fortunately, this appears to be changing. Samsung over the past year or so have launched some of the most compelling devices on the market. So, when it was announced that they would be the manufacturers of the next Nexus phone for Google in 2010, I was rather excited.

I have been using the Nexus S for a few months now, picking one up before its South African launch in Britain. After using it for this period, I can say, with certainty, that it is one of the best devices on the market.

Design and Build Quality:
From my experience Samsung Mobile, overall, do not build quality devices. They look cool for a few months but then the chrome starts to peel and bits just up and falloff. Generally, their devices feel cheap, and downright unappealing.

The Nexus S is Google’s official Android developer device; it appears that Samsung had to adhere to Google’s strict build quality standards. As a result the Nexus S is a superbly built device. From the way it sits in your hand to the magnificent curved touchscreen the entire package is extremely well put together.


The most innovative aspect of the design has to be the curved touchscreen. When I say curved I really do mean curved. The screen has a concave curve that aids with typing on the onscreen keyboard and navigating the menus. Originally, I thought this was a bit of a gimmick but after using the Nexus S’s curved screen then going back to the iPhone’s flat touchscreen there was a notable difference, favoring the Samsung. Typing on the curved screen was faster and the whole experience felt more natural.

The entire device is made from plastic, high quality plastic, but plastic nonetheless. This makes it feel less cutting edge, than the iPhone or most HTC’s that use aluminum and glass as part of their construction.

Insides:
It is fast, very fast. The Nexus S has a 1Ghz ARM processor and a dedicated GPU, translated this means that the Nexus S has the latest, most powerful insides of any smartphone currently available on the market.

The camera is a little disappointing; it rocks a full 8-megapixels but is useless in low light and takes an age-and-a-day to focus on your desired target, by which time they have most likely decided to go home. However, if the light is perfect and the planets are aligned the camera can pull off some amazing shots. But I cannot see the point of a sometimes-awesome camera when the iPhone 4 and the Sony Ericsson Arc’s cameras do a sid job 100% of the time.

Another disappointing element was the MP3 player, which is dull and flat. It also refuses to go loud; you are left listening to rock at a level that your gran would deem acceptable – which is not at all the point!

That’s it really; the camera and the MP3 player are the only two things I can fault on the Nexus S. As the rest of the phone is fantastic, the processor and GPU and the other inside bits all manage to be frugal enough that a day of battery life is possible. That is, provided you don’t use it for navigation.

OS:
Here is the kicker. You need to be a bit of a geek to love this device. The reason is simple. The Nexus S comes with stock-standard Android 2.3, which for your run of the mill human being can be pretty dull and uninspiring to use. It can do everything you need, like sync calendars to your Google account and run apps from the App Market but is a wholly uninspiring piece of software.

This is the very reason why HTC, Sony Ericsson and all other Android players overlay the OS with their in house modifications. With the Nexus S you have to modify the device. Most of these modifications, like the home screen, are available from the Android App Market. Nevertheless, you have to enjoy geeking out and trying different home screens, contact managers, task managers, widgets, and social applications to really enjoy this device.

Android is a truly customizable OS, which for some is awesome and others less so. The advantage of this customisability is that if you know what you are doing you can build yourself a perfectly customised device. The disadvantage is that not many people may bother, or not know what to do!

In conclusion, the Nexus S is one of the best smartphones currently available on the market, it presents the latest flavor of Android, always, being primarily an Android developer device, and a vanilla untainted Android experience which can be tarted up and modified to your heart’s desire, or not, you choose. It is somewhat reserved for the geeks – you know who you are.

Gadget Mobile Technology : Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Specs - Sony Ericsson is, finally, getting their act together. They have almost completely ditched Symbian and are focusing a ton of resources on Android development, and some interesting and different mobile phones based on Android.

This is a very good thing, Sony Ericsson have historically made rather good phones, but have taken far longer than the competition to adjust to the massive changes the iPhone started, in the cellular market.

Their latest line of Xperia devices has just hit our shores, and I was rather exited to get an Xperia Arc to review. After using the Xperia Arc for a few weeks, and overall loving the phone, I feel they may be a bit late to the party… again.

Build Quality:
Sony Ericsson have always made superb quality devices, The Arc continues this trend. While the chrome bezel may be a bit much for some, I believe it adds a certain suave character to the device.

The back of the device has a concave, well, arc. This makes it sit beautifully in your hand, making typing on, and using the touch screen, a very natural experience.

Sony Ericsson call the concave arc at the back of the device ‘Human Curvature’ that sounds a bit like a mannequin manufacturing company, but it does make the Arc one of the best built and best feeling Android mobiles currently available.

The build only gets better from there; the screen is marvelous, rocking an 854×480 resolution and very responsive touch feedback. Typing and playing games on the Arc is fast, smooth and just plain swish.

The 8.1 Megapixel camera complements the screen beautifully, and it appears that all the little enhancements Sony Ericsson have picked up from the Sony camera department have worked. Such as, Sony’s ‘Exmor R™ for mobile’ sensor, that adjusts the camera’s settings to get the best picture in low light. The way I see it is one the Sony Ericsson engineers’s girlfriends sent him low quality ‘naughty’ pictures and thanks to that, we now have a tech that improves pictures in low light. Debauchery: essential to technological development. Back to the point, the Xperia Arc has the best camera on a mobile I have ever used. It is clear, sharp, handles all lighting situations brilliantly and most of all it is unbelievably fast.

The other media features are equally as impressive. The sound quality from the media player is on par with the iPhone, which is really saying something. The dynamic range is superb, and it goes loud enough to really do some damage – which is a good thing!

Insides:
Here the Arc is somewhat lacking. It has a single-core 1Ghz processor, with a pretty decent graphics processor. It is by no means sluggish, but it is a generation behind everyone else. The closest competition to the Arc would have to be the HTC Sensation and that is rocking a dual-core 1.2Ghz processor and a mother of all graphics processors. The new technologies which the Arc lacks, result in devices, not only in better performance, but critically, better battery life, and a smoother user experience.

OS and Interface:
Rocking Android 2.3, the Arc is fully up to date with the competition. The overall impression I got using the Arc was it is an extremely smooth and slick device. The menu and launcher customizations add to the usability of Android and the Home screen is beautifully user customizable.

Sony Ericsson has toned down their TouchFlow and CoverFlow interfaces, in this latest version, which pretty much used to suck. Unfortunately they still do just a bit. Simply, I found it difficult to differentiate between TouchFlow and CoverFlow, they purport to offer enhanced management of contacts and incorporate all their social profiles. It fails though, focusing far too much on pretty graphics and not enough on usability.

So, simply turn it off. That is what I did. I used the standard Facebook and Twitter Android apps to sync my contacts social profiles and it worked beautifully. It also made the Arc a bit snappier as it freed up tons of memory.

Conclusion:
The Arc is a brilliant high-end Android device which may be a little late to the party. The OS is cutting edge and so is most of the hardware, but it is really hard to turn down the faster, if somewhat chunkier, but as well-built, HTC Sensation instead of the Arc? Overall the Arc will not disappoint, it does have a short shelf life.

If Sony Ericsson had launched the Arc at the beginning of the year, I would not hesitate to have called it the best Android phone on the market. They didn’t, launching the Arc now is squaring it off with devices a generation fresher. If I was spending real money and had to choose a high-end Android device, I would get the HTC Sensation or the Samsung Galaxy S II.

Gadget Mobile Technology: Super Pokemon Scramble 3DS Japan Release Date - Nintendo has officially confirmed that a new Pokemon game will be coming to 3DS. The game will go by the title of “Super Pokemon Scramble” and will be the official sequel to Nintendo’s Pokemon Rumble.

And just like any other Pokemon games, Super Pokemon Scramble will allow its player to play the role of a Pokemon trainer. The trainer will then be tasked to collect a wide range of Pokemon monsters and grow their collection.

It has also been reported that the new Nintendo 3DS game will be packed with three new gaming modes. These modes will be called as Pokemon Collection Battle Challenge, Charge Battle and Battle Royale. Each mode will come with different mechanics that a player should follow. Other speculations are stating that the game will most likely be offered as a multiplayer and will be equipped with a trading mode.

The game’s set to hit in Japan on July 28. No word yet on US launch.

Gadget Mobile Technology: Mac Os X Lion Review - Apple has released Lion, the latest version of its OS X operating system for desktops and laptops. Shane Richmond reviews it.
Apple last updated OS X two years ago with the release of Snow Leopard. That version of the operating system that runs Apple’s desktop and laptop computers focussed mostly on performance improvements and ‘under the hood’ tweaks. Lion, released today, is a different beast; it has more than 250 new features and some of them will change significantly the way you work with the operating system.

Between Snow Leopard and Lion, something important happened. The iPad, dismissed by many as a gadget that nobody needed, proved to be enormously popular. So popular, in fact, that Apple has brought some of the features of the iPad operating system, iOS, back to the Mac. This ‘iPad-ification’ of the Mac is most obvious in LaunchPad, a new feature that displays all the applications on your Mac on an iPad-style grid. You can even create folders and pages of apps, just as you can on an iOS device.

Experienced users may ignore LaunchPad. I had to remind myself to use it during my time testing Lion. If I want an app that isn’t in my dock, I habitually use Spotlight. However, this isn’t a feature for power users. It’s a cleverly-targeted feature for those whose only experience has been on an iOS device - an iPad, iPod touch or iPhone. Thinking of moving from an iOS device to your first Mac? LaunchPad makes everything look a little more familiar.

If LaunchPad is the part of Lion that most looks like the iPad, there are changes right across the new OS that bring the feel of the iPad. The iPad, and other iOS devices, are touch-based experiences, obviously. A new range of multi-touch gestures in Lion brings some of that experience to the laptop and desktop.

There are two-finger gestures - swipes, scrolls and taps - that work within apps and three-finger gestures that work between apps. Swiping three fingers upwards reveals another new feature: Mission Control. It shows everything that’s running on your Mac on one screen. It’s a super-charged version of expose and it’s much more useful. I’ve been using it constantly.

Motorola Milestone - How to make the best of it - Part 3

Well, in the 1st and 2nd parts of this Milestone experiment, I've shown you how to improve your phone's responsiveness and overall speed, while still running a stock Froyo. In this post I will show you how to fine tune the performance of your system so that it will improve your user experience, and provide more battery life.



Memory management

A further improvement you can do so that your apps can start faster, is to reconfigure the Android memory manager. By default, Android lets pretty much every app reside in memory, and only in very low memory situations, starts killing these apps, in order to free memory for another app you may want to start. This is in generally a good idea, and it allows you to better multitask because the more apps allowed to run simultaneously, the more apps that can multitask together. But that comes with at the price of new apps launch speed. Every time you start an app, the system frees RAM so that app can run properly. Next app you run gets the same treatment.

So basically an application start time looks like this:


AppStartTime = AndroidFreeRAMTime + AppLoadTime;


This happens almost every time.

What I will be trying to accomplish with the memory manager tuning is to remove the AndroidFreeRAMTime, by providing more free memory at all times. This means that you won't be able to run that many apps at the same time as you did before, so if you're heavy on multitasking, stop here, this tutorial is not for you. You can jump to the CPU tuning section instead.

So, first of all you need to grab an application from the Market called MinFreeManager. This application configures the memory management parameters for Android. Remember, you need root access to do these things.

The default system values provided were the following (you can always access them using the preset Default):


Foreground app: 6
Visible app: 8
Secondary server: 16
Hidden app: 20
Content provide: 22
Empty app: 24


the values I currently use are the following


Foreground app: 6
Visible app: 8
Secondary server: 16
Hidden app: 24
Content provide: 32
Empty app: 48


What are these values you may ask? Well, each value provides a free RAM threshold from where Android will start killing certain categories of apps. For example, it will kill the foreground app (the currently running one) if the free memory gets below 6MB of RAM. Visible Apps are apps that run in the background and so on.

You can use the Menu->Apply option to apply the values on the spot, and Apply at boot to apply them each time you start the phone.

The effect of these settings are constantly more free RAM, and so application load times are much lower. Android will still be killing apps in the background if the memory thresholds are crossed, but it won't influence your application start time. Now we practically removed the AndroidFreeRAMTime and we're left with:


AppStartTime = AppLoadTime


No more lags, translate into a snappier phone.

CPU tuning

If you choose to overclock your Milestone, this chapter will provide you a way to increase your battery life and speed the phone up a little.

Normally, Android uses CPU scaling so that when your phone is idle, or not doing much processing, the CPU clock is set to 125MHz by default. When the CPU is needed, the CPU clock is automatically set to 550MHz and stays that way until the CPU load is back to low values. Now I have overclocked the Milestone to 900MHz using a vsel of 63 in Milestone Overclock, so in my case the clock goes from 125MHz to 900MHz.
Even with this overclock, sometimes I felt a little lag when trying to do something. That was because the CPU took a little while to get from 125MHz to 900MHz. This is the performance part of the problem. The battery problem is that even if the phone is idle, if there is an app running with mid CPU load the CPU will stay at 900MHz until that app finishes. Now, you don't need an app that runs while your screen is off to finish as quickly as possible, right? So we need a way to tell the CPU to run at lower speeds when you don't need it.
Here is where SetCPU comes in handy. SetCPU allows you to specify the minimum CPU frequency and the maximum CPU frequency. It also allow you to define profiles with these 2 settings for various situations like when charging the phone, of when the screen is off, or even when you're low on battery.

In the main screen I've set the main online profile to have a minimum frequency of 500MHz and maximum of 900MHz. I have defined a profile for battery under 30% where I set the CPU to 125MHz up to 500MHz, another profile for screen off from 250MHz up to 500MHz, and another profile for charging where I set the CPU just like the one for screen off.

So basically, I managed to improve the speed of the phone while I'm operating it, because the minimum speed is now 500MHz and the switch from 500 to 900 when needed is much smoother than from 125 to 900. The screen off profile helps me conserve battery power when the phone's screen is turned off, the charging helps by lowering the time taken for a full charge, and the battery less than 30% helps when your baterry is low and you still need to operate your phone.

Nokia N9 finally surfaces - MeeGo on 12MP sounds good

Well, it looks like Nokia finally decided to let us see what the N9 is all about. The 12MP camera is no surprise, probably the same as the N8, but this baby has a sliding keyboard like the E7, and runs MeeGo!

Why all the excitement? Well, believe it or not, even if they sided with Microsoft by adopting Windows Phone as their primary smartphone platform, Nokia isn't that dumb to let the customers that wanted them to switch to Android get away. Running MeeGo means that the N9 could easily run Android, so here it is... WP7 on one hand, MeeGoDroid on the other... Keep everybody happy. I think this is a very good move. It's like when computer manufacturers load up some crappy linux on you new laptop. They know you'll install something else on it, but it has be sold functional, so...

I'm not saying MeeGo isn't good, but right now, Android has a 200.000 app base behind it.

Gadget Mobile Technology: New Macbook Air Review - Thinner is better. At least, that's what Apple seems to think, judging by the new MacBook Air. It's so thin you could use it to shave. In fact, the 11-inch version is the most portable laptop we've ever encountered, even taking netbooks into account. But can it possibly be worth its £870 price tag?

Model behaviour
The 11-inch version of the MacBook Air comes in two basic configurations. The cheapest model offers 64GB of flash storage, a dual-core 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce 320M graphics card. If you're willing to stump up £1,020, you can get a version with 128GB of flash storage. The RAM and processor options on both versions can be upgraded slightly, but it'll cost you.

Design is one of Apple's main strengths, and the 11-inch Air is another exemplary effort. It measures 300mm wide by 192mm deep. When closed, it tapers from 17mm tall at the back to a mere 3mm at the front. It can be hard to get your head around figures like that when you're not actually holding the machine, but take our word for it -- the Air is mind-warpingly thin.

Heavy metal
This computer will slide snugly into a bag -- and maybe even a large handbag -- with less fuss than any other laptop we've seen. But you might be surprised by its weight. The Air might look like a sheet of A4, but, at 1.06kg, it definitely feels like a computer. This machine is still lighter than just about every other laptop and netbook, though, so it's not going to shatter your bones or crush your children.
Another thing to bear in mind when it comes to portability is that the Air's power cable is very long and the transformer is bulky. If you're planning to charge the Air up while you're out and about, you'll need to make extra space in your bag.

The computer's weight is largely down to its aluminium construction. While the Air would be a darn sight lighter if its chassis were plastic, its aluminium carcass makes it a sturdy chap, which is important when you're dealing with something thinner than an After Eight.

The aluminium chassis also lends this computer a classy feel. Slim, glossy and elegant, there's very little to criticise about the Air's design. Our only real gripe is that the aluminium bezel around the screen doesn't look as classy as the black glossy version on the MacBook Pro.

Track and feel
The Air is a pleasure to use. The keyboard is massive, running nearly to the edges of the chassis. Each key is large, and there's enough space between them to reduce the potential for typos. Rattling off emails at speed is definitely on the cards. Sadly, the keyboard has no backlight, unlike the MacBook Pro.

The trackpad is fantastic. Large, responsive and silky smooth, it's extremely satisfying to use, and you'll quickly get the hang of swooping through the Mac OS X interface using multi-touch gestures.

It's the Air's ease of use that really blows the 11-inch competition out of the water. There are other machines of this size that look good and offer reasonably speedy performance, but none that come close in terms of usability. Creating a miniature computer that's a genuine pleasure to use is no mean feat.

A snifter of port
Previous versions of the Air received a merciless drubbing for having barely any connectivity options, sporting only one USB port, and lacking a FireWire socket, Ethernet jack and optical drive. The situation hasn't improved much on the new Air, although the notably absent ports are arguably less important than they used to be.

Down the left of the 11-inch Air, you'll find a USB port and a 3.5mm socket for plugging in your headphones. On the right-hand side, there's another USB port and a DisplayPort connection. That's your lot.

So what will you miss out on? Playing DVDs is out of the question, but arguably they're becoming less important to many computer users. The lack of an Ethernet port is a bitter pill to swallow, though -- if you want to get online, you'll have to rely on Wi-Fi. That's bound to prove massively inconvenient at some point. There's no SD card slot either, unlike on the 13-inch model. That could drive camera owners crazy.

We don't think the lack of connectivity options hamstrings the Air, but we suggest you think about when and where you'd use this laptop before making a purchase, as well as what other pieces of tech you'd use it with.

Despite Apple touting the Air as an 11-inch machine, its display actually measures 11.6 inches diagonally. The screen boasts a resolution of 1,366x768 pixels, which is higher than that of most netbook displays. It's a high resolution for a fairly small screen, so you might occasionally find text in Web pages appears uncomfortably small. Still, in general, the Air has a great display. It's bright and extremely colourful, with a wide viewing angle.

Stale chips
The Air's processor options are rather long in the tooth. As standard, you get a dual-core Intel Core 2 Duo CPU clocked at 1.4GHz with 3MB of L2 cache. You can upgrade the 128GB model's processor to one clocked at 1.6GHz if you fancy a minor speed boost, but it'll set you back £82, and we'd be surprised if it delivers very much extra grunt. Each model comes with an Nvidia GeForce 320M graphics card too.

The Air offers 2GB of DDR3 RAM as standard, but you can upgrade to 4GB of RAM for £80. If you're going to splash out any extra cash on the Air, we reckon upgrading the RAM should be a priority, as 2GB is pretty measly.

Our review model was the most basic version, with a 1.4GHz CPU and 2GB of RAM. When we ran the Xbench benchmark test, the Air scored 123.50, which is pretty average. The 13-inch Air with a 1.86GHz Core 2 Duo chip scored 162.45, which is better, but still pretty mediocre.

Despite having a dedicated GPU, the Air's graphics performance isn't up to much. The Air ran our Cinebench graphics test at 10.92 frames per second, which isn't very good at all. Don't expect this machine to handle games well.

On paper, then, the Air's performance isn't great. Anecdotally, however, we never found the Air to be sluggish. Swooping around OS X and opening software all proved reasonably swift and, most importantly, high-definition video played really smoothly, with only very occasional stutter.

But, any way you slice it, paying a premium for somewhat dated hardware never feels good. We've few complaints about the user experience the Air offers, but, if you're not comfortable with its processor options, you might want to wait until the next version of the computer is released. Hopefully, we'll then see more up-to-date chips snaking their way into the Air.

Flashy fella
The Air uses flash storage. It's expensive, but flash is more reliable than a traditional hard drive because it doesn't have any fragile moving parts, so it's more likely to survive a nasty knock. It's also faster. But it's worth bearing in mind that, even if you could get inside the chassis, the Air doesn't use a standard solid-state drive, so replacing or upgrading the drive will be nigh on impossible.

We tested the Air's battery by running high-definition video on a loop and timing how long it took for the laptop to run out of juice. It lasted for around 2 hours and 30 minutes, which is quite impressive, and makes us think Apple's claim of 5 hours of wireless usage isn't too far off the mark. It's worth noting that the 13-inch Air managed 3 hours and 10 minutes in the same test.

Conclusion
The 11-inch Apple MacBook Air is a delightful little machine, but, before buying it, make sure you know exactly how you'll use it. Otherwise, your new aluminium buddy could turn into an expensive nemesis. For casual Web browsing, multimedia playback and travel purposes, it's a great option.

If you need a machine that can handle intensive computing tasks, though, you'll need to keep looking. We'd advise checking out the new 13-inch MacBook Pro. It's powerful and not too much bigger.

Taking notes is a very used feature on any phone, not just smartphones. People write down anything they need to remember into phone memos, on paper even on the palm of their hands :)











Evernote comes in handy by organizing the note taking part on your Android smartphone. First you need to create an Evernote account. They also have a paid Premium service which allows you to upload 1GB monthly to their service. For most users, the free account will do.

What is the deal with Evernote?

Well, Evernote is not just an app for Android, they have an app for whatever OS you can think of, even Symbian and Palm. There is an iOS app, there is a Windows app, Mac OS app, and even a Web app to access you notes an files whenever you want to.

Evernote is organized in notebooks. Each notebook contains notes, and each note can contain text, images, PDF documents and many more.

The Android app integrates with the sharing feature of Android so you can share anything from your device with the Evernote app as a note.

Another cool thing is the browser plugin which allows you to send web clips to your Evernote account.

Nokia E7 unboxing and hands on

Well, finally the Nokia E7 came by, courtesy of the nice folks at WOMWorldNokia. The phone feels rock solid and taking into account the materials used, it's say it is rock solid. And it has the scars to prove it(two little bumps from a previous fall his former owner had). The ClearBlack display is gorgeous, indoors I cannot tell where the contour ends and where the display starts. You'll see in the video what I mean.




The slide out keyboard(pop up keyboard or snap out keyboard more likely) is the most comfortable keyboard I've used on a mobile phone. The keys are spaced perfectly, the press is not too sensitive, nor too hard, but just right. In short it's a pleasure to write on.
